How Does the Typhoid Vaccine Work?
Typhoid vaccinations are used to prevent typhoid fever. Typhoid is caused by a germ called Salmonella typhi. The typhoid vaccine prevents typhoid fever, but it is not 100% effective.
For this reason, it is wise to take preventative measures even if you do have the vaccine. Do your best to avoid any food and water that may be contaminated or infected and avoid all contact with people infected with typhoid.

Injection
The typhoid vaccine injections should be taken 2 weeks prior to travel. It is safe for everyone over the age of 2.
Tablet
The typhoid vaccine in tablet form is available for everyone over the age of 6. The treatment consists of four tablets that must be taken every other day. The final dose should be completed at least 1 week before travel.

Symptoms
Symptoms of typhoid fever generally begin around 1–3 weeks after exposure to Typhoid.
The two primary symptoms of typhoid fever are rash and a high fever which can reach a dangerous temperature of 104ºF.
Other symptoms can include:
- Diarrhoea
- Nausea
- Weakness
- Constipation
- Headaches
